A new agreement signed in Bahrain aims to advance the long-discussed project to connect six Gulf countries by rail, potentially boosting economic ties and transport resilience.

An agreement on a GCC railway project was signed in Bahrain, offering a chance to realize a long-held regional ambition. The project aims to connect six Gulf countries, fostering tangible embodiment of their shared ties.

The railway has gained new importance amid regional tensions, highlighting the need for diversified transport and logistics networks. A connected rail system could provide land-based resilience for moving goods between nations and strengthen links between ports, industrial centers, and markets.

The proposed 2,100-kilometer network, with a target completion by 2030, represents an investment in the region's economic security. However, the project faces challenges including ambitious timelines, potential cost increases, and the need to convince freight operators of rail's commercial viability. Governments may need to offer significant support, and agreeing on common standards across six jurisdictions will be complex.

Despite these hurdles, there are reasons for optimism, including existing national rail investments in the UAE and a cross-border project with Oman. The railway initiative also aligns with calls for closer cooperation among GCC nations.
